Formação de Arqueteria
BOW MAKING FORMATION
The bow maker (or arqueteiro, in Portuguese) is the craftsman whose job consists of making bows for musical instruments. The term in Portuguese also comes from the French language and is derived from the word "archet", which means arch. It is common to have professionals dedicated exclusively to the construction of these arches, a practice that dates back at least to the 16th century, when Brazilwood was already used – preferred for its flexibility and the absence of knots, a fundamental characteristic to avoid breakages. At CCO, students are also prepared to practice this job, which is as fundamental as that of a luthier.
As with lutherie training, the course lasts three years and students also learn how to maintain musical instruments. Likewise, no prior knowledge is required and candidates must be between 15 and 17 years old. During training, students learn about the materials and tools used in the construction of bows which, in addition to wood, also used in instruments, includes horse hair, a part that is rubbed against the strings of the instrument, making it vibrate and produce sound.
They also get to know the great craftsmen who made bows, as well as the models they developed, which have evolved throughout the history of music, as well as the instruments, according to the sound required by the different styles that have spanned the centuries. As with the lutherie specialization, bow making students also receive foreign language classes.
